As an entrepreneur, as an artist, as a creator, as someone who's following your own path, one thing is certain:

You will experience Resistance almost every single hour of every single day. Doubt, fear, anxiety. Is it good enough? Is it the right thing? Will I crash and burn? 

And if you're not careful, you'll never actually create the business or life you say you want because you let Resistance win the game.  

*Resistance comes with a capital R because it's an ACTUAL living, breathing monster. 

What does resistance look like?

Here's what it looks like for me:

Resistance is picking the dry skin on my face instead of doing the work. (Just me?)

Resistance is plucking my leg hair instead of doing the work. (I'm *sure* that's just me.)

Resistance is thinking I'm hungry when I'm most definitely NOT hungry instead of doing the work.

Resistance is checking my phone 50 times a minute instead of doing the work.

Resistance is that eyebrow hair that's just a tiny bit too short to get at so I dig and dig and dig at it until I make my face bleed instead of doing the work.

Resistance is thinking I need to learn more instead of doing the work.

Resistance is remembering that friend I should email instead of doing the work.

Resistance is peeling that dry skin off my feet (too much information?)

Resistance is the cup of coffee I make instead of doing the work.

Resistance is cleaning the bathroom, doing the washing, or going to the supermarket instead of doing the work.

Resistance is doing ALMOST ANYTHING ELSE except...do the work.

There's just one problem.

I want to do the work. I want the results of doing the work. I want the feeling that comes with having done the work. I want the life that doing the work will give me.

So why the f*ck am I NOT doing the work?

Why the f*ck are YOU not doing the work?


Here's why: You don't want it enough

If you say you want something and you're not doing the work, there're only two possible reasons why.

1. You don't want it enough.

2. You've forgotten how much you want it.

To find out which problem you're experiencing, start by tackling problem number two - you've forgotten how much you want it. Here's what to do...


1. Remind yourself what you want

What you want might look like:

Earning £10,000 by the end of next month.

Having more free time.

Creating a 100% location independent lifestyle. 

Signing 3 new clients next week.

Buying a house.


2. Know why you want it

Those things you think you want? The money? The house? The clients? Those things aren't really what you want. No one wants £10,000. It's just bits of paper and metal. What you want is what that can give you. What it can help you do. And the resulting feelings of having or doing those things.

Example:

I want to earn £10,000.

What does earning £10,000 mean to me?

It means being able to leave my job.

What does that mean to me?

It means freedom.

What does that mean to me?

And so on and so on and so on. Keep asking "what does that mean to me?" until you get to the thing you really want.

Knowing what you want isn't enough. You have to know WHY you want those things. And what I really mean by that is that when you think about having the thing or doing the thing or being the thing that you want and what that means to you, you need to be having a visceral reaction to that thought. You need to be able to taste it, see it, touch it, feel it. 

If your why doesn't make you sweat with excitement or your heart pound with determination, no amount of wanting something is going to help you overcome the Resistance. Resistance is a powerful beast and you have to be full to breaking point with your why to overcome it.

So really, WHAT do you want and WHY do you want it? 


Connect to your what and your why every single day

Those powerful feelings you just got connected to? They can easily get lost as you begin the work and get pulled into the day to day reality of what it actually takes.

You have to keep connected to what you want and why you want it. You have to make yourself sweat with excitement or your heart pound with determination EVERY SINGLE DAY. You have to touch, taste, see and hear exactly what life's going to be like when you finish the work and get what you want.

How do you do that? Here's what's working for me. I don't know if it'll work for you. But it's working for me, so maybe it'll work for you too.

I wake up. I open my journal. And I write. I write what my future life looks like. I write what my business looks like. I write what sort of clients I work with. I write how much money I earn. I write about where I live. I write about my health and how I spend my time. I write about who I'm with and what our life is like together. I write about who I am. And I write about it until I can feel it so deep inside me that it's as if it's already my reality.

And then I get up and do the work.

Because now? Now I REALLY want the things I want and I know exactly WHY I want those things. And that's some seriously powerful motivation to not pick my face or check my phone or wash the dishes or whatever the resistance looks like that day. It's also the thing that has me say NO, NO, NO when people invite to me things or ask for my time.  

I do the same in the evening before I go to sleep. I open my journal and I write. So I go to sleep full of what I want, why I want it and believing I already have it.

If you get REALLY connected to what you want and why you want it in this way and you're STILL not doing the work, then there's only one problem left:

You don't want it enough.

And then it's time to find out what you DO really want and work at that instead.
